Welcome to Dauphiné
Virieu was built by Wilfrid de Virieu in the year 1010. It remained in the family until 1220, was lost through marriage, but then was recovered in 1874. The family members still live in the castle (some haunt).
The history of the castle is mingled with that of France and of the Dauphiné
(in the 14th century, the territory was attributed to the king's elder son, hence "Le Dauphin")
through wars, royal visits and revolutions until World War II, when it was used to conceal tons
of arms and explosives for the Résistance.
Virescit Vulnere Virtus (the wound strengthens courage).
This history is told in “Grands événements”.
As you can see in the pictures, the landscape is outstanding and the castle itself is
of great architectural importance. Both points are detailed and illustrated
in “Les lieux”
and are presented in even more detail (with numerous pictures)
in “La Visite”.
The gardens are also famous, go to “Les Jardins”
for a glimpse.
In the summer, the castle hosts a score of events
listed in “Animations”.
Some are very intimate such as the romantic concerts at night,
see “Soirées”.
For general information, see the “Infos Pratiques” section
on how to come, hours, guided tours and accommodation.
And if you want to organise a group trip for either
leisure or school,
the permanent staff lead by Laurence Pinzetta is at your service (see “Groupes”).
She will answer your requests and make arrangements,
preferably by mail but also directly by phone (in English).
See the “Contacts” page.
And if you want even more information, it is there in “Les amis de Virieu”,
on accommodation, the surrounding area (notably Lake Paladru), food, books, credits, etc.
